combining forms
This term, which may well have been used first by the OED editors, denotes a word form that is only used in combination with other elements. The normal linking vowel is -o (e.g. Anglo-, electro-) or -i (alti-, horti-). Combining forms can also occur at the ends of words (e.g. -imeter, -ology).
